How to Play the Europe Flags Quiz
A flag quiz for the 45 countries of Europe. Europe is full of near-identical tricolours, so this quiz rewards attention to colour order, stripe direction and small coats of arms.
- Look at the flag. Three of the nine tiles start open.
- Guess the country. Every miss opens three more tiles and gives a hint: the continent, the main colours, then the first letter.
- Keep your run going. Solve it within three tries and move on to the next flag. Your best run is saved on this device.
Tips for the Europe Flags
- Five Nordic countries use the off-centre Scandinavian cross: Denmark (white on red), Norway (blue and white on red), Sweden (yellow on blue), Finland (blue on white) and Iceland (red and white on blue).
- Check the stripe direction first. France, Belgium, Italy, Ireland, Romania and Moldova are vertical; Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Estonia are horizontal.
- The Netherlands and Luxembourg are both red, white and blue horizontal stripes. Luxembourg uses a lighter blue and a longer flag.
- White, blue and red Slavic tricolours are separated by their arms: Slovakia and Slovenia add a coat of arms to the Russian pattern, and Serbia reverses the order to red, blue, white.
- Poland is white over red. Monaco is red over white, as is Indonesia in Asia, so if the red is on top it is not Poland.
- A black double-headed eagle on red is Albania. Montenegro has a gold eagle on red with a gold border.
