How to Play the US States Flags Quiz
A state flag quiz covering all 50 United States. Hints tell you the census region (Northeast, Midwest, South or West). Some state flags are instantly recognisable; many others are a seal on a blue field, which is where the real challenge lies.
- Look at the flag. Three of the nine tiles start open.
- Guess the state. Every miss opens three more tiles and gives a hint: the census region, the main colours, then the first letter.
- Keep your run going. Solve it within three tries and move on to the next flag. Your best run is saved on this device.
Tips for the US States Flags
- Many states use a seal or coat of arms on a blue field. Read the state name or the details in the seal once more tiles open.
- Memorable outliers: Alaska (the Big Dipper and North Star), Arizona (a copper star and sunset rays), Colorado (a red C), New Mexico (the red Zia sun on yellow) and Texas (the Lone Star).
- Ohio is the only state flag that is not a rectangle — it is a swallowtail pennant.
- Hawaii is the only state flag with the Union Flag of the United Kingdom in it.
- Several states have adopted new flags recently: Mississippi in 2021 with a magnolia, and Utah and Minnesota in 2024.
- California’s bear, Wyoming’s bison and Washington’s portrait of George Washington on green are easy wins.
