How to Play the Country Guessing Game
This country guessing game is the map twin of our flag game: instead of a flag, you see a country’s outline in its real place on the globe, with no names on the map. Guess the country from its shape and its neighbours.
- Find the highlighted country. A country is shaded on an unlabelled globe. Small countries get a circle so you can spot them.
- Type your guess. Each wrong answer tells you how far away it is, in which direction the answer lies, and how close you were as a percentage.
- Use the clues. Every miss zooms the map out to show more neighbours. After two misses you see the continent, after three the first letter of the capital, after four the capital itself.
Tips to Guess the Country Faster
- Use coastlines. Is the country landlocked, on an island or on a long coast? That alone removes most of the world.
- Follow the arrow. A wrong guess is still useful: the arrow and distance point you towards the answer, so your next guess should be in that direction and at about that distance.
- Watch the proximity score. Above 90% means you are within about 2,000 km — usually the right region.
- Small countries get a ring. If you see a circle rather than a shape, think of micro-states and island nations.
- Learn shapes with the flags. The flags of the world page groups countries by continent, which is the same order you need on the map.
Country Guessing Game FAQ
What is the country guessing game?
A geography game where you guess the country highlighted on a blank map. You have 5 tries and get distance and direction clues after each guess.
How is it different from the flag game?
The flag game asks you to recognise a flag. The country guessing game asks you to recognise a country by its shape and position on the map.
Is there a new country every day?
Yes. The daily country changes at midnight UTC and is the same for every player. Unlimited practice is always available.
How is the distance measured?
It is the great-circle distance between the centre points of your guess and the answer, in kilometres. The arrow shows the direction from your guess towards the answer.
Which countries can come up?
All 195 countries used across the site — the 193 UN member states plus Vatican City and Palestine.
Is the country guessing game free?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and works on phones, tablets and computers.
